INT. LINCOLN’S OFFICE – DAY

Lincoln is on the phone, holding Tobey’s resume. Among the
list of references is

DR. WOLFGANG DE VERA - (201) 561-9944

27.

LINCOLN
If you could just spare a minute.

INT. DR. DE VERA’S OFFICE – CONTINUING

Walls full of diplomas and certificates of merit.
Dr. De Vera, late 60’s, speaks on a cordless.

DE VERA
Gonna have to make it quick. I’m
about to board a helicopter for a
special dinner.

The helicopter can be seen and heard outside his window in
The distance.

DE VERA
(continuing)
After his father’s death he suffered
a nervous breakdown. Violent mood
swings. Then they found him in
his bath tub. Razor blades.

The helicopter approaches, lands right outside on the lawn.
Trees blow wild. And it’s very loud. De Vera has to yell.

DE VERA
(continuing)
Just as his father was overdosing,
Tobey’s mother tells him she was
Raped by his father. Date rape.
Her parents would never allow
Abortion. She kept the whole thing
a secret anyway. So they had Tobey.
Honestly, I don’t know if that kid is
Capable of ever having a healthy
Sexual relationship again. I feel
Sorry for the next girl who gets close
to him.

INT. TRACY’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

Tracy lies on her bed. Tobey lies on the floor.

TRACY
My mom called today. She wants
Me to come and visit her.

This does not excite her.

TOBEY
Weren’t you gonna move in with her
Or something?

28.

TRACY
If I ever drink again. She lives
Near this really good clinic.

TOBEY
But there’s really nothin there, right?

TRACY
I’d have a better payin job. Her
Boyfriend could get me a secretary
Position.

TOBEY
Mmmm. Sounds like fun.

TRACY
Uuggghhh. But the clinic. Supposed
To be like the best in North America.

She notices his attention is to the corner of the room.

TRACY
Wahtchya looking at?

TOBEY
That bottle. That like a souvenir?

He indicates to an empty 12 oz. sitting on the shelf.

TRACY
My last drink. Last of the Mohicans.
Five months.

He then notices an ALE HOUSE bar receipt posted nearby.

TOBEY
Ale house. My dad’s band played
there a lot.

TRACY
My last night out. I still go there
from time to time. Just when things
get hectic. I don’t drink. Just sit
there, order a salad, relax. And talk
To Denise. Friend a mine who works
there.

29.

He stares at the bottle. She stares at him.

INT. DARNEL’S TRUCK – DAY

Keys turn the ignition as Darnel looks over his delivery
List. First stop: 31 Steiner Place.

EXT. HOUSE – LATER

31 on the front door.

Down the end of the street Darne;’s truck approaches. He
reaches the house, parks in front.

INT. HOUSE – KITCHEN – MOMENTS LATER

Darnel begins removing the old dishwasher. JUDGE, 55, sits
At the table reading the paper. He’s a giant of a man. Intimidating.

DARNEL
So. What do you do?

JUDGE
I’m a judge. For the state.

DARNEL
Really?

JUDGE
Really.

He grabs the morning paper, shows it to Darnel. The
headline:

TOUGH JUDGE SENTENCES YOUTH TO LIFE. There’s
A picture of Judge beneath: a bulldog expression on his face.

DARNEL
Life? What he do?

JUDGE
He did drugs. Lots of them.

Darnel is frozen for a moment. Then he nods his head and
Returns to work.
